Simple tips that will help you make an elaborate outline for a research paper

It is a great idea to write an outline for your research paper. It is a step that a lot of people overlook. They think that it is a waste of time because it is a rather time consuming task. However, it does save time. An outline will save time in your research because it will help you determine what topics to research. If you don’t create an outline, you can be taking notes on topics that you won’t even be discussing. It may also cause you to talk about topics that do not relate to your thesis. They may relate to the overall topic but not prove the thesis.

An outline will also help in the writing process because you will simply have to beef it up by adding more sentences. If you create an elaborate outline, you will have a large portion of the writing already completed before you even start writing.

Here is how you create an elaborate outline:

Start with the basic outline format. This will include the five main points and the sub points. It should look something like this.

  1. Introduction
    • Background
    • Thesis
  2. Body paragraph one
    • Supporting fact one
    • Supporting fact two
  3. Body paragraph two
    • Supporting fact one
    • Supporting fact two
  4. Body paragraph three
    • Supporting fact one
    • Supporting fact two
  5. Conclusion
    • state thesis

Write each of these points in complete sentences. Write them as if you were writing them for your paper. Be sure to include transitional phrases when starting a new body paragraph topic.

Add additional points to the outline as you get specific supporting evidence. Write these in complete sentences as well.

Body paragraph three

  1. Supporting fact one
    • The exact quote or piece of evidence from your research
    • The reason why this proves the supporting fact
  2. Supporting fact two
    • The exact quote or piece of evidence from your research
    • The reason why this proves the supporting fact

Be sure to also include complete citation information in the body of the outline and also a reference page separate at the end. This will be the same reference page that you will submit with your paper.

These four steps will help guide you through the process of writing an elaborate outline.
