When you are writing a paper it is important that you stay organized. How? The first step is to write your outline. To do this follow these steps:
- Ask yourself what your topic is and why it is significant
- Ask yourself what background material the reader needs
- Ask yourself what your thesis statement is
- Ask yourself what organizational plan is going to support the purpose of your thesis
After you have an outline you need to write your introduction. Your introduction needs to have the following information:
- It needs to present all relevant background information
- It needs to define any terms that the reader needs to know before reading
- It needs to explain the purpose of your paper
- It needs reveal the organizational plan of your paper
With the introduction laid out it is time to write the body.
- Use your outline as a guide for writing the body of your paper
- Build your essay based around the main arguments that you want to make. Avoid letting your sources be the foundation for the organization of your paper
- Integrate all of your sources into the body
- Summarize and analyze the published work rather than just reporting it back to the reader
- Try to vary the different levels of detail and avoid generalizing
With your body out of the way you can start on the conclusion.
- If your research paper is complex you might have to summarize the content for the reader
- If you have not yet explained to the reader why your paper or findings are significant then this is the place to do it
- Suggest where your topic needs further research and leave the reader with a thought provoking question or thought
Revising your draft
Once you are done writing your paper it is time to revise the drafts.
- Check your paper for organization. Look for logical flow from your introduction to your body. Look for coherence throughout and depth in the body paragraphs. Make sure the conclusion is effective.
- Check your paragraphs for good topic sentences. Ensure that the sequence of ideas is in order. Use details to support all of your arguments. Summarize sentences where ever necessary. Make sure you use transitions in between your paragraphs.
- At the sentence level you need to check your punctuation as well as your word choice and your spelling. Make sure your sentence structure is top notch too.
- Verify that you documented all of your sources and that you used an appropriate formatting style contingent with your project requirements.
