Writer’s block can be a serious problem. This is especially true when it strikes before you can even find a worthwhile topic to write about. When you feel this happening to you, avoid panicking and try one of the following:
Step outside for some fresh air
Sometimes being trapped indoors can stifle your creativity. Get away from the place where your ideas stagnate and take a walk in the sunlight. A change of scenery may help the ideas flow.
Read a newspaper
Sometimes a newspaper article is hiding the topic you need to work on somewhere between the lines. Don’t try to look at it too closely, just let the idea jump out at you. It might happen minutes or hours after you’ve put down the paper. Just trust that the process has helped.
Call a friend
Sometimes a nice, non-academic conversation can help you to think about a topic that might be perfect. Call someone you haven’t spoken to for a while.
Listen to some music
You can sometimes help yourself think creatively by getting lost in another activity. Listen to some music and think about something else. In the back of your mind you’ll still be working on your problem.
Pick up a text book

By reading the topics you can get yourself thinking about other topics more suited to the type of research you have in mind.
